Tesla and Resig

· May 15th, 2008

Since I keep up to date fantastically with posts, a quick update. While I spent the past few days watching documentaries on Nikola Tesla (good one here, and a “brief”, 10-min overview is here) and space, I still did manage to get a bit of work done. I updated Previewlink to v0.3, which includes a few more features. Still in the sandbox on mozilla addons though which sucks, but there’s not much I can do for now.

As well, another minor update was the “release” of the MyBB Forum Tracker. Next priority is to release the ability to use it on multiple forums, but I haven’t gotten around to that yet. Down the track, hopefully I can couple it with a few other websites as another of their tools and build it into a more well rounded network, all complimenting each other. And I definitely have plans to make it work with multiple forum systems later on including phpbb/smf/vb.

Next project which I’m definitely confident in releasing is called Resig (not active yet). Basically it’s a website that offers both a section for users, and for forum owners. The users part will have a small account area to add “signatures” or anything you’d normally put in forum sigs around the internet, whether bbcode/text/custom markup or even html. They can be modified here and the changes will reflect all over the net, wherever you have it enabled. For forum owners, there’ll be a set of plugins available to enable the functionality on your site. Users will be able to use their control panel to add a Resig sig, which will automatically pull it from this site. Basically its a way to synchronise your signature across multiple forums, in the case you’re selling something or wish to advertise etc. Each signature will have a “Powered by Resig” link, unless the forum owner pays a small fee. Users can also pay a small fee (say, $3 lifetime) to have a few more features enabled. Fees will help us keep the site up and ad-free. Right now, I only have a plugin for MyBB because I haven’t been bothered to look at other forum software much, but if you know how to create plugins for other software, contact me with a quote. I’ll provide plenty of details about it.

I’m also working with another developer and we’re currently in the planning stages of a mobile-based social network/sms service website. Not too refined yet on what it’ll be but hopefully we should be able to clear it up soon and release a bit of info.

Lastly, I experimented with Terragen and Blender yesterday, with mixed results. Although I think I progressed, my first Terragen render was basically a grey pile of pathetic, and the Blender was a little house. If I can refine it in a few days, I’ll post up some screenshots. It seems fun, Blender/any 3D program would be a fun career or at the very least, a hobby.

MyBB Firefox addon

· April 24th, 2008

Half experiment, half skills, this little addon will (in the end) keep you up to date on the latest posts on your forum and latest private messages. Currently it only works with MyBB but hopefully later on it can be adapted to other forum softwares (I chose MyBB because I’ve used it before and I’m pretty comfortable with it).

Only a few bugs then it should be ready for a release. Unfortunately it only supports one forum for now until I can modify it so you could use it on any forum you’d like, with multiple profiles etc. If anyone is interested in helping modify it for another forum software then let me know.

The discussion thread is here and here’s a few screenshots so far:

Project 2: Previewlink

· April 2nd, 2008

Next project.

Previewlink is a site that pulls together as many url shortening websites as I can find, and allows you to be routed through it so you can preview the links. Currently it supports over 50 sites (full list here).

I have a few updates I wish to make posted here, and more will probably come after that. My main goal at the moment is to get as many reviews as possible, so I can submit it for review at AMO (currently its in the sandbox, and only available to registered users). This would probably open it up a bit and help its legitimacy, and (fingers crossed) get a bit more exposure.

Go ahead and install it now (because you want to help me out with it), and try and break it. It should help with the bug chasing.

Screw IE6

· March 25th, 2008

While this might simply cut away a large percentage of visitors from any sites I make, after reading the TechCrunch post about Savethedevelopers.org (more or less encouraging people to upgrade from IE6, when IE7 was released years ago), I decided I won’t bother getting sites to render properly in IE6.

This means:

  • I can use transparent PNGs
  • I don’t need to reinstall or somehow view sites in IE6
  • Saves about 78,000 hours of time for each project

Now that’s not to say I can’t get it to work for IE6, I just don’t want to. While IE6 users may not feel the need to upgrade to view my (and other) sites, I don’t feel the need to code correctly for them. I doubt that they’ll appear horrid, they’ll probably render good enough, but I won’t bother testing for them, only IE7+, Firefox 2+ and Opera 9+ (don’t know about Safari etc since I don’t have a Mac)

For anyone who doesn’t use it, download Firefox now.

gTranslate

· March 16th, 2008

Link to gTranslate

Today, bored, after thinking up idea 307, I figured I’d put together a little script called ‘gTranslate’. Basically it uses Google Translate and translates through multiple languages at once. Normally machine translators aren’t perfect, but only useful to give a broad idea, so I figured using this to go through several languages and back to normal should have some bad results (English - Spanish - German - English - Dutch - English). I was thinking about adding a ‘hall of fame’ of sorts for the best ones but I think i’ll skip it. Hopefully I can edit the script and put it up in a day or 2.

Another little script I had an idea for was a small regex tester, I’m not sure if it exists at the moment or not, but it doesn’t matter since I’ll make it anyway. That won’t really be a “project” since it’ll take about half a day to make.

In other news, the Atlanta Hawks tied New Jersey for 8th seed in the East. Here’s hoping the Nets lose to the Bulls in 2 days, and the Hawks beat the Wizards (doubt it). Then NJ/Hawks play on the 19th. Denver are also completely dominating Seattle in today’s game, with 48 points in the first quarter and sitting on 72 with 3 minutes left in the half.

Project “1″ - Xenma.com

· March 11th, 2008

To be honest this isn’t project 1, but what the hell. I had this site up before, but took it down for hosting issues, and just re-uploaded it a few minutes ago. It’s similar to mailinator and dodgit, but with a few new things coming. One thing I’d love to implement but can’t yet will have to come later.

Sorry for the lack of details, but there isn’t much to say. Get a free mailbox by going to xenma.com/mailboxname (or changing mailboxname to anything else). Send mail to it, read it easily. It’s mainly used to sign up for sites you don’t give a crap about, but they still require an email address + confirmation mail sometimes. Have fun with it. Mail will get deleted every now and then so don’t use it for anything sensitive. Or illegal (not a fan of jail at this point).

There’s also a Tangler forum I’m using at the moment for any feedback etc.

The good thing is, this site will also fit extremely well into a “central” site idea I have. More to come (maybe).

Note to self: Make a new logo
